On Thursday morning, less than 12 hours after she had taken her bow at the Laurie Beecham Theater, 81 years old Joan Rivers suffered a major cardiac arrest while undergoing vocal cord surgery, which triggered a stroke. She was put into a medically induced coma and has remained unconscious ever since. She is famous for her appearance on Fashion Police, a hit U.S. television show in which she brilliantly subverts the artifice and vanity of Hollywood’s red carpet scene by delivering cruel jibes about celebrities and their appearance. This legend of entertainment who in the Sixties became the first woman to break the male stranglehold on TV comedy has, after all, forged a pioneering, seven-decade career by staying true to a single principle: the best way to cope with the worst misfortunes life throws at you is to find a way, however tasteless, to laugh about them.
