JOAN RIVERS PASSES ON AT 81

Joan Rivers, the bold, pioneering comedian whose gossipy persona catapulted her to fame, has died. She was 81. We look back at the laughs she brought with an unapologetic sense of humor: http://cnn.it/1BeiX3J

Joan Rivers has died at 81. The comedian had been on life support at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York since suffering a cardiac arrest last week. Her daughter Melissa Rivers announced the news in a statement: “My mother's greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.” She added that her mother had passed away surrounded by family and friends at 1:17pm on Thursday 4 September. Comedian, actress, talk show host, best-selling author... there's no doubt Joan Rivers had an extraordinary life. Her career spanned six decades and she was still working solidly and very much a star when she passed away at age 81.
