A Sudanese woman sentenced to death for apostasy and later detained again before being freed landed in Rome on Thursday to meet with Pope Francis.
Meriam Ibrahim, a 27-year-old Christian, was accompanied by her husband, Daniel Wani, and their two children when she spoke with the pope for nearly half an hour at the Vatican.
“The pope thanked her for her witness to faith,'' The pope wanted the meeting to serve as a “gesture of support to all those who suffer for their faith, and living in difficult or restrictive situations,” according to The Telegraph
Ibrahim was sentenced to be executed for converting from Islam to Christianity and for marrying a man of a different religion. Under Sudanese law, she was considered a Muslim because that was her father's religion, and it made no difference that she claimed to be raised as a Christian by her mother. Muslim women are prohibited from marrying non-Muslim men in Sudan, and Ibrahim married a Christian man.
